TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION ANNOUNCE ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES AND TARGET TO 2050

With the target to contribute to the sustainable development of global environment, Toyota has set challenging target to be achived over the next 35 years – that is Toyota Environmental challenge and target to 2050. They are detailed target toward global environmental issues such as climate change, water shortages, resource depletion, and degradation of biodiversity, as well as aiming to reduce the negative impact of manufacturing and driving vehicles as much as possible. This challenge has been publishing and implementing widely in Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan and all branches in countries worldwide.

The challenge is composed of six individual challenges across three areas: Ever-better cars, ever-better manufacturing, and enriching lives of communities.

 

 

EVER-BETTER CAR

CHALLENGE 1: New Vehicles Zero CO2

While the world’s tempratute is increasing causing many complicated weather disasters, in order to join hands with the world to keep stable earth’s temprature through decreasing CO2, Toyota has decided to challenge itself to reduce vehicle CO2 emissions by 90 percent by 2050 in comparison with Toyota global’s 2010 levels. To achieve these long-term targets, Toyota set short-terms targets:

  • Achieving annual global sales of over 30,000 fuel cell vehicles around or after 2020. In
    Japan, selling at least 1,000 fuel cell vehicles per month (well in excess of 10,000 per
    year).
  • Beginning sales of fuel cell buses in small numbers by early 2017, focusing on Tokyo;
    preparing to sell over 100 fuel cell buses ahead of the 2020 Summer Olympics and
    Paralympics in Tokyo.
  • Achieve sales of 1.5 million hybrids annually and 15 million hybrids cumulatively by 2020.
  • Reducing global average new-vehicle CO2 emissions by more than 22 percent by 2020 (compared to Toyota's 2010 global average).

CHALLENGE 2: Life Cycle Zero CO2 Emissions

Toyota commits to reduce to zero not simply the CO2 emissions produced in traveling and manufacturing, but all CO2 emissions including in the processes of materials production, and disposal and recycling of vehicles. To achieve this, Toyota set the targets in short-term:

  •  Cutting total vehicle lifecycle CO2 emissions, including materials, parts and manufacturing.
  •  Developing, designing and using low-CO2 materials; reducing the amount of material and the number of parts used in order to cut overall CO2 emissions involved in manufacturing materials.
  •  Using recycled bio-materials more widely; designing vehicles for easy disassembly; other initiatives focusing on environment-conscious vehicle designs.

 

EVER-BETTER MANUFACTURING

CHALLENGE 3: Plant Zero CO2 Emissions

Not only do vehicles emit CO2 while traveling; CO2 is also generated during their manufacture process. Thus, Toyota accepted the challenge for zero CO2 emmission at all Toyota plants by 2050.

In details, to achieve this, Toyota will reduce CO2 emissions through day-to-day continuous improvements and introduction of low-CO2 production methods to reduce CO2 amount in each car manufacturing process and production line.

In details, Toyota commits to:

  • Cutting CO2 emissions per car from new plants and new production lines to roughly half of 2001 levels by 2020, and roughly a third by 2030; using renewable energy and hydrogen-based power generation to to completely eliminate CO2 emissions from our plants by 2050.
  • Using our experience with fuel cell technology (particularly combustion and electricity generation) to develop hydrogen-based power generation methods for use in production; beginning testing on FCV production lines by 2020.
  • Using wind power produced on-site at our Tahara Plant by around 2020.
  • Using new technology to ensure that production process-related CO2 emissions per vehicle manufactured at our new plant in Mexico are at least 40 percent lower than 2001 levels when the plant goes online in 2019.
  • Exclusively using locally-produced wind power, biomass and hydroelectric power to generate electricity at our plants in Brazil (Toyota do Brasil) from 2015.

CHALLENGE 4: Minimizing and Optimizing Water Usage

According to forecasts, the world’s population will climb to 9.1 billion by 2050, demand for water will increase by 55 percent from current levels, and as a result, the percentage of the total population suffering water shortages will reach 40 percent. In automobile manufacturing, water is used in painting, forging and other processes. Therefore, even a small reduction of its impact on the water environment is important. Thus, Toyota will enact effective wastewater management and minimizing water consumption through activities such as:

  •  Reducing water consumption in existing manufacturing processes; introducing technologies that reduce industrial water consumption through rainwater use; improving water recycling rates in manufacturing processes, and recycling plant wastewater.
  • Improving local environments by ensuring (by our own standards) that plant wastewater is cleaner than local river water.

ENRICHING LIVES OF COMMUNITY

CHALLENGE 5: Establishing a Recycling-Based Society and Systems

With the worldwide increase in population and the pressure for economic growth and convenient lifestyles, the consumption of resources is accelerating. Thus, Toyota commits to:

  • Improve resource efficiency toward by: (1) utilization of eco-friendly materials; (2) making use of parts longer; (3) development of recycling technology; (4) making vehicles from the materials of end-of-life vehicles.
  • Promote global rollout of end-of-life vehicle treatment and recycling technologies developed in Japan by establishing two projects in 2016:

+ Toyota Global 100 Dismantlers Project: Safe and eco-friendly automobile dismantling facilities certified by Toyota will be established around the world for the development of a scheme that optimizes collection and processing of resources from end-of-life vehicles.

+ Toyota Global Car-to-Car Recycle Project: Recycling technologies and systems developed in Japan will be rolled out globally, turning end-of-life vehicles back into useful resources for the production of vehicles.

 

CHALLENGE 6: Establishing a Future Society in Harmony with Nature

Currently, deforestation is progressing around the world, so that every year, forest equivalent to 14 percent of Japan’s land area is lost. To realize our aim of “enriching lives of communities” in each region, the Toyota group companies have engaged in expanding Toyota's long-standing conservation activities in the areas of forestry, environmental grants, and environmental education; sharing our knowledge and experience gained from these activities through three future-oriented projects:

+ Toyota Green Wave Project - connecting with local communities: A series of mutually affiliated tree-planting and habitat restoration and preservation activities run by Toyota and Toyota Group companies. Cooperation will be sought from local governments and businesses, as well as suppliers and sales companies, to expand the scope of activities and contribute to improving the natural environment.

+ Toyota Today for Tomorrow Project - connecting with the world: A long-standing environmental grant program that will be strengthened on a global scale. Toyota will launch a project fostering global conservation, in cooperation with various like-minded organizations around the world.

+ Toyota Education for Sustainable Development Project - connecting to the future: Based on the concept of training people to take care of the environment, this series of environmental education programs will be significantly expanded using conservation sites owned by Toyota in Japan. Overseas, an Environmental Education Center has opened in China, followed by one in Thailand.

From the establishment in 1937, Toyota Motor Corporation and all Toyota branches in worldwide always commit to protect the environment not only through social contribution activities but also through initiatives in manufacturing and business, such as with the development of the first vehicles in the world to be manufactured by Hybrid technology, Prius, MIRAI fuel cells…From now to 2050, Toyota will continue its efforts to achieve environmental challenges, contribute to the environmental conservation worldwide, contribute to the sustainable development of society and human.
