Monozukuri Course

Based on our commitment to the development of Vietnam, Toyota Vietnam Foundation (TVF) has introduced the Monozukuri (Know-how for success in production and sales) course at Hanoi University of Technology (HUT) to professors and students from universities and managers from enterprises.

Why need Monozukuri?

Vietnam is currently in the process of integration into the global economy and soon will open the domestic economy to other countries. This will pose Vietnamese enterprises and individuals with not only opportunities but also threats. One clear threat is that the “tariff wall”, which was built to protect the economy, will be pulled down or kept at a very low level leaving local enterprises vulnerable in the face of fierce competition from the outside world. In order to change this threat into opportunity, they will have to enhance competitiveness. This can be done in two ways simultaneously: achieving high quality at a reasonable cost. Otherwise, they remain uncompetitive.

How to get high product quality with effective cost?

Three things are needed to make high quality products at reasonable cost. These are: Skills, Knowledge, and Know-how. People in Toyota know that there’s a need for a systematic mechanism of Skill’s Transfer; a systematic mechanism of Continuous Improvement “KAIZEN”, a “lean” process for “effectiveness and low cost”, and good management of the above 3 factors. We also know that the most important element in this process is human beings, not machines or computers. And therefore, education and human resource development is important. This is the reason TVF has introduced the Monozukuri course in Vietnam to share Toyota’s know-how in production and sales with Vietnamese people.

The Monozukuri course

Since Sep 2005, Monozukuri course has been implemented by TVF, and it has drawn attention of many enterprises and students in Vietnam.

In 2006, In order to systemize this program, TMV has collaborated with Hanoi University of Technology to set up and operate the Monozukuri training center under an agreement with Ministry of Education and Training. TMV’s expectation is to share the Toyota’s know how in manufacturing and doing business – Toyota Production System to professors, students and enterprises. This course also aims to implement Kaizen-showcase at local enterprises to help trainees to apply their knowledge from the course into their business and production innovation.

Up to now, there are 7 Monozukuri courses organized at Hanoi University of Technology, led by professors from world-class universities, and leaders from Toyota Motor Corporation as well as professors of Hanoi University of Technology. The course has attracted participation of more than 350 students and representatives of local enterprises. Among them, there are representatives from Toyota’s local suppliers who are striving to apply knowledge gained from the course into their businesses. For examples, Vietnam Precision Industrial Ltd. Company (VPIC), which provided the central body inner pillar for Innova, started applying Toyota production systems (TPS) in their plant from Jan, 2008 and have already begun to harvest the initial achievements.
