Traffic Safety Education Programs
Due to the underdeveloped infrastructure in Vietnam, the number of traffic related casualties has increased to over 30,000 annually. This makes traffic safety an important issue. Although there were efforts to raise traffic safety awareness; these were done on a piecemeal basis and not in a large scale. This is the reason why Traffic Safety Education Program (TSEP for short) has been implemented.
The Traffic Safety Education Program (TSEP) is one of four key programs in the framework of the Toyota Vietnam Foundation (TVF) founded by Toyota Motor Vietnam (TMV) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education& Training and the National Traffic Safety Committee since 2005-2006 school year.
TSEP aims at educating the traffic safety awareness for primary pupils in all schools nationwide. Applying the spirit of “learning for fun and fun to learn”, TSEP has provided new teaching methods with interesting syllabuses as well as helpful extracurricular activities. In this way, traffic safety learning becomes more attractive and interesting to the pupils.
There are four main activities in TSEP program:
* Providing teacher manual and teaching equipment of traffic safety for teachers and pupils in all primary schools.
* Performing traffic safety role-plays at primary schools.
* Organizing traffic safety seminars for primary teachers and education officers.
* Propagandizing and Introducing TSEP program in mass media in order to bring a wider and deeper social effect
With TSEP, we do hope to initiatively bring the boat and our future generations to the shores of safety. Let together with TMV to prepare the ground for safety future in Vietnam!
Activities
In the three school years (2005-2008), TSEP was introduced and it has started on large scale with four main activities as above.
The second school year (2006-2007), TSEP was improved and expanded nationwide. Introducing new film disks of traffic safety education for primary students; organizing drawing contest on traffic safety.
The third school year (2007-2008), TSEP program was continuing to be improved and it was started socialization: Continuing to implement four main activities; more traffic safety role-plays in some provinces which have hot issues about traffic; Introducing new film disks of traffic safety role-plays; starting to socialize TSEP with 6 local contest of traffic safety; Training to transfer traffic safety role-plays to 6 provinces.
The fourth years (2008-2009), Socialization program was promoted and renewing TSEP education document ; Holding local traffic safety contests in 8 provinces as well as national contest.
The fifth year (2009-2010), continuing to promote socialization program widely: Delivering new traffic safety textbooks with new cartoon characteristics of “Turtle and Rapid” for all 1sr grade children and teaching manual for teachers in all primary schools nationwide; Organizing local traffic safety contest in 6 provinces as well as national contest; Encouraging Department of Education & Training to continue expansion hands - puppet performing.
The six year (2010-2011): The provincial traffic safety contest were organized in 8 cities and provinces nationwide with the participation of over 4,000 primary students and one national traffic safety contest was also held in Ho Chi Minh city. There was the particiapation of more than 150 contestants from 15 provinces and nearly 4,000 primary students in Ho Chi Minh city. Besides, TVF also printed and awarded over 65,000 sets of traffic safety textbooks for teachers of all primary schools nationwide.

ACHIEVEMENTS
After six years (2005-2011), TSEP has delivered over 7.5 millions traffic safety textbooks for all 1st grade children nationwide; over 83,000 VCD and 83,000 teaching manuals for teachers in primary schools; organized successfully 32 seminars for 4,500 primary teachers and educational officers. Besides TSEP has successfully hold 28 local contests on traffic safety with attendances of 7,000 pupils.
In particular, in 2008-2009 school years, the first program "National Traffic Safety Contest" for primary school pupils was held in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City with the participations of more than 140 pupils from 14 provinces nationwide and about 3,000 spectators. Also, during 2 school years 2007-2008 and 2008-2009, hands-puppet activity has been transferred to 10 provinces and was performed at nearly 700 primary schools with the participation of 427,000 pupils.
Passing 6 years of implementation, TSEP has achieved considerable successes and received enthusiastic responses from teachers, parents and pupils nationwide as well as high appreciations from Ministry of Education and Training. Because of the effectiveness of TSEP documents, Ministry of Education and Training has decided to combine TSEP document into the general traffic safety education program which is being implemented in primary school nationwide.
Besides, TVF was also honored to be awarded with the Certificate of Merit for Education course of Vietnam by the Ministry of Education and Training and Certificate of Merit for the Contributions to the traffic safety area by the National Traffic Safety Committee in 2011.
